Across the UK, significant investment has transformed the availability of full fibre connectivity, while Europe continues to accelerate its own transition towards gigabit-capable networks and the gradual retirement of legacy copper infrastructure. Regulators and network operators are increasingly encouraging organisations to move away from ageing technologies in favour of future-ready fibre services. This progress represents a major milestone, but it also creates an interesting challenge. A fast connection is only as good as the network behind it
One of the most common misconceptions surrounding business connectivity is that installing a faster internet service automatically improves network performance throughout an organisation. In practice, the external connection is only one part of a much larger infrastructure.
Once that fibre enters a building, every aspect of the internal network influences the experience users receive. It is not unusual for organisations to invest in a gigabit-capable connection while continuing to rely on ageing cabling, outdated switches or wireless networks that were designed for a very different way of working.

Although these environments differ significantly, they all depend upon the same principle: reliable internal infrastructure.
As organisations continue to modernise, attention is shifting from simply increasing internet speed towards creating resilient, scalable network environments that can support future growth.
Infrastructure should be planned, not simply installed

Looking beyond the fibre rollout…
The UK’s transition towards full fibre represents one of the most significant infrastructure developments in recent years, and the move away from legacy copper networks will continue throughout 2026 and into 2027.
For businesses, however, the conversation should not end when fibre reaches the premises. The organisations that will gain the greatest value from these national investments will be those that also invest in the infrastructure inside their buildings.
Reliable Wi-Fi, structured cabling, fibre backbones and well-designed network architecture have all become fundamental components of business performance, operational resilience and future growth.
